from
Java to Bali, AS R matter of fact, the influence of Hindu culture
had begun some centuries before and the process of acculturation
was only speeded up after the 10th century, because of the close
relationship between the kings of Java and Bali. This influence
of Hindu-Javanese culture made itself felt even more stronger from
the 14th to the 15th century. And when Islam entered Java, many
noblemen from Majapahit who did not want to he converted into Islam
running away to Bali. The influence of the Hindu-Javanese culture
was so deep, so that most of the themes of the Balinese dance-dramas
are Javanese.
The
indigenous culture of the Balinese merged to such an extent with
the Hindu-Javanese (Hindu-Buddhist) culture that a unique society
was formed which remained unchanged for centuries. When the island
of Java and other regions of Indonesia underwent a process of conversion
to Islam, the island of Bali maintained its Hindu-Bali culture.
It is therefore not surprising that Bali is regarded as a living
museum of the Hindu-Javanese period, Many products of Old Javanese
literature from the period of Majapahit have been found in Bali,
written on the leaves of the lontar-palm.
Nor
did the period of western colonization bring about a change in the
Hindu-Bali culture.
Western writers and tourists say that the Balinese lead a simple
life in which the system seems to be that of mutual assistance and
for -this reason the island of Bali has been called a "paradise
on earth". This quality of mutual assistance is a distinctive
characteristic of Indonesian society in general, and is especially
in evidence on the island of Bali.
